Analyzing ads from charities: Hospital for Sick Children

Here are two commercials the Hospital for Sick Children have used to persuade people to donate money.

2012

2008

What persuasive devices do they use to persuade you to donate money?

  1. Class response:
    - they make you feel bad by showing the kids being treated
    - make you want to donate
    - use sad songs
    - the kids and the staff sing the song
    - used real kids and staff from the hospital
    - used little kids and babies because they want you to think about how young they are (you don't want them to die young)
    - make you feel that if you don't donate, the kids won't get treatment
    - statement at the end tells us what will happen if we don't donate
    - targets moms and dads
